Finding the World's Paradises

The warming sun, never-ending beaches, and magnificent sunsets are what most people see when they plan their trip to an island destination. It would be wonderful if it could always be as one imagines. Following these few guidelines can help anyone plan a vacation.

Weather plays a big part in planning. Some islands remain fairly mild year-round making them all-season destinations. Check on hurricane, typhoon, and rainy seasons, some areas offer special deals during these times. Be warned you might be cutting your trip short.

If you decide to rent a vehicle some islands drive on the left side of the road. Decide before you go if this is an option, if not find out about public transportation or stay some place within walking distance of all the attractions. If you have a choice get a four-wheel-drive vehicle so exploring will be easier on rough or unpaved roads.

Timing is everything, check what months have the best fishing, whale watching, sporting events, and cultural festivals. Plan your itineraries around these activities and really enjoy what the island has to offer.

Know the customs laws before you start shopping. Some countries only allow a certain amount of duty-free merchandise; it depends on what country you are from and what island you traveled to. Pack things you are going to declare separately from your other items and keep all your sales receipts in one place.

Also, keep in mind that not all of the local vendors will have credit card processing or charge high fees to use credit cards. Make sure you bring some cash – otherwise, you might miss out on some great souvenirs for your friends and family back home!

Find out about drinking water before you go. If the water is not suitable or is in question, stick to bottle water. No one wants to be sick on a trip and this is one way to avoid it.

Passports are now needed on a large majority of destinations. Voter registration or certified birth certificates are no longer accepted as proof of U.S. citizenship. On many islands you may be required to show proof of return airline ticket and enough funds for your stay.

Learning the some of the language or having a translator book will help save you time and money. The locals will be more likely to assist you if you are trying to learn their language.

Pack clothes that are appropriate for that country, do not disrespect the place you are visiting. Keep your packing simple. You will need a couple of nice dress shirts, slacks, and dresses for upscale occasions. For the rest of the trip casual, comfortable attire will work. Keep the bathing suits at the beach or poolside they are not acceptable elsewhere. Not all places have standard North American 120-volt/60-cycle AC electric current. Plan accordingly before you bring hairdryers and razors, you can save on luggage space.

Hotel check-in time is usually 3 p.m. and check-out time is generally noon. Most hotels usually have an area for early arrivals either it be poolside or a restaurant, the same applies for late departures. Call your hotel ahead of time to make accommodations. You will save yourself money on airfare by taking any flight instead of worrying about your check-in and check-out times.
